First Time PZS Exhibitor: Olympia Zine Fest

Where do you live?

We live in Olympia, Washington, where we’re busy planning the second annual Olympia Zine Fest!

If this is your first time tabling at Portland Zine Symposium, what excites you most about Portland and its zine community?

This is the first time we’ll be tabling as organizers of Olympia Zine Fest, but some of us have tabled for our own zines, distros, and libraries over the years. At the 2016 symposium, OZF organizer Sage Adderley will also be tabling for her distro, Sweet Candy.

We consider the Portland Zine Symposium to be the Olympia Zine Fest’s BFF and big sister fest. We value the exchange of ideas between the Portland zine community and the Olympia zine community.

Share with us an image of you creating and/or your creative space.

What is your zine-making process?

We each have very different processes. Some of us at OZF letterpress, some of us cut and paste, some of us hand-draw, and some of us use computers. Every zinester is like a special snowflake!

How do you keep inspired?

Coffee, cats, supporting and encouraging a local zine community, and at times, blood sacrifice.

If you could give your 16 year old teen self a zine, which one would it be?

Sage: a self-care zine

Kelsey: DIY or Don’t We? and Murder Can Be Fun

Ally: Doris #15

Alyssa: something self-care related
Nicki: A zine about coping with anxiety. Also, Shotgun Seamstress and mix tapes inspired by Osa’s zine that could be shared with friends in the small town where I grew up. We’re so excited that she’s going to be in Olympia this year!

Naomi: Literally anything – I hadn’t even seen a zine until I was in college but I had heard of them and they sounded awesome. Anything about feminism and/or self-care.

What are you working on for this year’s Portland Zine Symposium?

We’ll have a bunch of zines made by OZF organizers, prints, and information about the 2016 Olympia Zine Fest, coming up on October 1st and 2nd. We’ll also be accepting donations of zines for our little zine library at Obsidian, a cafe and performance venue located in downtown Olympia.
