First Time PZS Exhibitor: Joyce S. Lee

We’ll be posting short interviews each day with the many exhibitors tabling at the 2016 Zine Symposium. Come meet all of these amazing zinesters, Saturday July 9th at Ambridge Event Center here in Portland, OR. Remember, there is only 1 day of tabling at this year’s Symposium. On Sunday July 10th, you’ll find us hosting a Skillshare day at the Independent Publishing Resource Center. Keep checking in with the site for additional exhibitor interviews, workshop and panel schedules, and fun events leading up to the Symposium.

Where do you live? Oakland, California

If this is your first time tabling at Portland Zine Symposium, what excites you most about Portland and its zine community?Yes, I’m a first time tabler at PZS. I like that in Portland sometimes it rains softly for a little while, but it doesn’t seem to phase people. That seems like the sign of a good city. I don’t know much about the people of the Portland zine community, but I am excited to get to meet them!

Share with us an image of you creating and/or your creative space. What is your zine-making process?

Generally I get an idea while I’m out and about somewhere, I putter about at my desk, then I do a lot of stapling on the floor.
How do you keep inspired? I like going unexpected places, whether it’s on an airplane somewhere far away or just a neighborhood side street where you don’t normally walk. It helps to keep you seeing (and thinking) about the world differently.

If you could give your 16th year old teen self a zine, which one would it be? “The Art of Losing” by
Reno Dakota.

What are you working on for this year’s Portland Zine Symposium? Share with us some photos of your new work! I’m making a zine called “Stock Responses for the Everyday Interviewer”. It has some art inspired by stock photos and 300 different expressions you can use to make conversation. If you’ve ever been in a situation where you didn’t know what to say, this zine’s for you.
